Entertaiment

The entertainment industry has been struggling for a while now. Consumers are bargain hunting and downloading music from the internet, while independent recording artists, producers and filmmakers have become more proficient at using software to create their own content.

From late 15c., “to maintain within,” with a sense of gratify, amuse, delight, a derivative of Latin intertenere (from entre- “among”; see inter-) + tenir (from tenere, PIE root *ten- “stretch”). The suffix -ment is a common one in English, from French verb stems (amazement, betterment, merriment, etc.).

According to Bates and Ferri (2010), entertainment is an activity understood objectively that consists of communication between text and audience from an external stimulus, offers pleasure to the audience, requires audience participation and occurs in a passive form.
